My lifelong Journey with Plants
Share
I was first introduced to the concept of "useful" plants, as a teenager. Maybe 16. This occurred when a group of my high school peers, arrived at our front door asking if they could pick dandelions in the front yard. From which they were to make Dandelion Wine. My fascination began.
At the same time, I was deep into science fiction and fantasy of many kinds. Dandelion Wine, by Ray Bradbury, was a current book in my reading pile. I love this book to this day.
From Dandelions, I was moved by Rosemary. At Santa Barbara Community College, there were large fragrant bushes that just knocked me out, on a daily basis. I was so happy to wrap myself around these bushes, as I went from class to class.
Then came comfrey and yerba santa and clover and so many many more. I was fortunate enough to stumble upon an herb book, The Herb Companion by. This book, and then Back to Eden by Jethro Kloss, changed my life. I began dabbling with drying herbs, infusing them in oil, and making sachets. I dreamed of having rows of jars filled with herbs. I imagined myself in the Crystal Cave, with Merlin, stirring and chanting to the great plant spirits.
The natural progression to using herbs in oils for massage, then on to skincare seemed organic for me. It has been a joyous journey. I am eternally grateful to the plant universe for making my life much more enriched with the opportunity to work with them.
Until next time,,,,,,,I am off to the garden.
